How to Rebuild an Engine


Valve Head Inspection

  1. Identify cracks
    • Tools needed: Magnafluc
    • Tools needed: Dye Penetrant

  2. Check for flatness
    • Note head flatness on Valve Head Inspection Worksheet
    • Tools needed: Straight edge
    • Tools needed: Feeler gauge

  3. Check for worn guides
    • Note worn guides on Valve Head Inspection Worksheet
    • Tools needed: Dial Indicator

  4. Check for seat recession
    • Note worn seats on Valve Head Inspection Worksheet

  5. Check for worn stems
    • Replace all valves with stems that are worn beyond OEM specification
    • Tools needed: Micrometer

  6. Check for worn keeper groves
    • Replace worn keepers

  7. Check for thin margins on valves
    • Margins thinner on intake valves
    • Compare with OEM specification: Replace all valves with margins below specification
    • Tools needed: Micrometer

  8. Measure valve springs
    • Tension - compress spring to designated length
    • Measure free length
    • Measure for squareness
    • Replace any springs outside OWM specification
    • Tools needed: Spring compressor
    • Tools needed: Micrometer
    • Tools needed: 90 degree straight edge
