How to Rebuild an Engine


Find TDC of Cylinder 1

  1. Turn engine approximately to TDC (Top Dead Center) of cylinder 1
    • Zero dial indicator
    • Tools needed: Degree wheel
    • Tools needed: Dial indicator

  2. Rotate engine counterclockwise .050"
    • Record reading on degree wheel
    • Go past then return to remove slack in chain
    • Tools needed: Degree wheel
    • Tools needed: Dial Indicator

  3. Rotate engine .100" clockwise
    • Record reading on degree wheel
    • Go past then return to remove slack in chain
    • Tools needed: Degree wheel
    • Tools needed: Dial Indicator

  4. Add both readings together and divide by 2

  5. Move pointer to the degree equal to the number
    • Tools needed: Pointer
    • Tools needed: Degree wheel

  6. Rotate engine to 0 degree
    • This should be the point at which the dial indicator changes direction
    • If direction doesn't change, repear the process until TDC is found
    • Tools needed: Degree wheel
    • Tools needed: Dial indicator
