How to Rebuild an Engine


Engine Block Inspection - Part 2

  1. Remove core plugs, brackets, guide pin, ect...

  2. Visually check block for cracks

  3. Magnaflux engine block
    • Magnaflux cast iron and steel only
    • Dye penetrant aluminum blocks
    • Tools needed: Magnaflux
    • Tools needed: Dye penetrant

  4. Check deck surface for flatness
    • Tools needed: Straight edge
    • Tools needed: Feeler gauge

  5. If deck surface flatness exceeds specification; resurface block
    • Use caution not to remove to much material as valves may hit pistons

  6. Measure cylinder bore
    • Measure for taper
    • Measure for out of round
    • Tools needed: Dial bore gauge

  7. Check for discoloration and washboard
    • Use a rigid stone hone to identify washboard
    • Tools needed: Rigid Stone Hone

  8. Check main bearing bores
    • Check bore alignment
    • Check broes for out of round
    • Tools needed: Round straight edge
    • Tools needed: Feeler gauge
    • Tools needed: Dial bore gauge
